Definition
ABS, or Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene, (chemical formula (C8H8)x· (C4H6)y·(C3H3N)z) is a common filament used in 3D printing.
Printing Tips
Before Printing
Heat build plate as close to 85°C as possible. Using hairspray without lubricant (i.e., Aqua Net) is recommended.
Hyrel Setting Recommendations
The following settings are recommended for printing ABS on a Hyrel Printer:
MK1-250 Print Head Settings
ABS prints best from the MK1-250 print head with these settings:
- Pulses per nanoliter: (leave default)
- Flow Multiplier: 1.000
- Prime Values:
- Steps: 100
- Rate: 10,000
- Time: 25
- Primes after tool change: 1
- Unprime Values:
- Steps: 100
- Rate: 10,000
- Time: 20
- Unprimes before tool change: 1
Slic3r Settings
- Printing Temperature: 235°C
- Built Plate Temperature: 85°C
- Cooling: 0% for first five layers; 50% thereafter
After Printing
Use progressively higher grit sandpapers to remove ridges from layers. Use heat gun to darken areas discolored by sanding. Apply finishing spray (XTC or similar) for a glossy finish.

Warnings
Print in well ventilated conditions to avoid inhalation of potentially toxic fumes, although these are produced in relatively small amounts.
Avoid exposure to direct flame or temperatures greater than 404°C, as this could cause the ABS to catch fire.
